Rediscovering Margit Wagner
IFI Presents
The IFI Irish Film Institute is pleased to present a selection of films made in Ireland by German filmmaker Margit Wagner between 1959 and 1975. This programme of films, curated with Prof Gisela Holfter of University of Limerick, has been made possible thanks to the generous support of Culture Ireland.
The films will be presented in German with English subtitles.
Margit Wagner first visited Ireland in 1953, the same year she broadcast her first radio feature on the country. She played a remarkable role in shaping German perceptions of Ireland. Her films, produced between the late 1950s and the 1970s, were highly acclaimed. In recognition of her work, the National University of Ireland awarded her an honorary doctorate in 1980. However, for many years Wagner’s films were largely inaccessible in Ireland. It is time to rediscover this pioneering filmmaker and reassess her lasting contribution to Irish-German cultural relations.
